NEW YORK — NBA owners and players failed to reach a deal after about seven hours of talks Saturday, mostly about salary-cap structure, and will meet again Monday.

Union executive director Billy Hunter said the sides are still “miles apart” on the cap system, and they didn’t even talk about the division of revenues, the other big obstacle to a labor deal that would end the lockout.

With exactly a month left before the regular season opens, commissioner David Stern said he had nothing to announce in terms of cancellations.

Watney, Na share 54-hole lead

LAS VEGAS — Nick Watney shot a 7-under-par 64 for a share of the third- round lead with Kevin Na at the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.

Watney, a two-time winner this year, birdied the final three holes and five of the last six to match Na at 17-under. Na followed his second-round 63 with a 66.

John Huston shot a 6-under 66 for a 9-under total and a share of the second-round lead with Nick Price and Kenny Perry, who both shot 69, at the Champions Tour’s SAS Championship in Cary, N.C.

• Northern Ireland’s Michael Hoey took a three- shot lead after three rounds of the Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland.

Flat Out wins Gold Cup

NEW YORK — Flat Out took the lead on the turn for home and won the $750,000 Jockey Club Gold Cup to cap a Super Saturday of racing at Belmont Park with Breeders’ Cup implications.

Flat Out’s 2 1/4-length win over 2010 Belmont Stakes winner Drosselmeyer, with favorite Stay Thirsty third, likely sends the 5-year-old horse into the BC Classic at Churchill Downs on Nov. 5 as one of the favorites. Earlier, Uncle Mo showed he’s back to his winning ways with a 3-length victory in the $200,000 Kelso Handicap and the filly Havre de Grace cruised to an 8 1/4-length win in the $350,000 Beldame Stakes.

• Wilburn found the perfect spot at the ideal time to spoil Shackleford’s Breeders’ Cup preparations, beating the Preakness winner by 4 3/4 lengths in the Grade II $500,000 Indiana Derby at Hoosier Park in Anderson.

Truex on Dover pole

DOVER, Del. — Martin Truex Jr. returned to the site of his only career Cup win and turned a lap of 159.004 mph to win the pole for today’s Sprint Cup race at Dover International Speedway.

Carl Edwards dominated for the second time this year at Dover International in winning his seventh race of the season in the Nationwide Series.

• IndyCar points leader Will Power won the pole for today’s race at Kentucky Speedway in Sparta.

Ron Hornaday picked up his 50th victory in the Trucks Series with a win at Kentucky Speedway.

Antron Brown raced to the No. 1 qualifying position in top fuel at the NHRA Nationals in Mohnton, Pa. Johnny Gray (funny car), Jason Line (pro stock) and Hector Arana Jr. (pro stock motorcycle) led their respective categories.

• Arizona Diamondbacks hitting coach Don Baylor rejoined the team, returning a day after a fainting spell he blamed on a bad reaction to medicine he was taking for back spasms.

Sidney Crosby is expected to miss the Pittsburgh Penguins’ season opener Thursday because of a concussion suffered in January.
