Even after years of experience counseling people with mental and behavioral issues, Roosevelt Leslie found that the Mental Health First Aid workshop offered new strategies and insights.

“What I noticed is that the skills in the class apply to any relationship,” he said.

“I’m married, with two small children. When they cry, my initial reaction used to be: ‘Get over it!’ But now I really check into their feelings as an individual — asking ‘Why do you feel like that?’ — can lead to learning things you might never have known. That can change how they act at school or at home.”

The two-day workshop, sponsored by Arapahoe/Douglas Mental Health Network, includes information on recognizing and coping with panic attacks, depression, eating and substance abuse, self-harm and other disorders.
