Firefighters are working to contain a remote wildfire near Basalt this evening, as crews expect the fire to move into White River National Forest.

The 6 acre blaze, named the Wingo Fire, is burning in rugged terrain about three miles southeast of Basalt, according to a news release from U.S. Forest Service.

No structures or homes are threatened by the fire.

The fire, likely caused by lightening, was first reported at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, burning on Bureau of Land Management land between the Arbaney Gulch and the Wheatly Gulch.

The terrain is too rugged to approach the fire on-foot, so crews are using helicopters to drop water onto the fire, in an effort to stop the blaze from spreading downhill toward Colorado Highway 82.

The fire is expected to move northeast. Smoke can be seen from Highway 82 and Basalt.

Crews expect that cooler weather predicted for later this week, will help contain the fire.
