A jury Monday convicted an ex-Fort Carson soldier of child-abuse resulting in death for killing a friend’s infant son.

George Peters, 24, faces 16 to 80 years in prison.

The verdict comes after more than 11 hours of deliberation over three days. Jurors convicted Peters of four counts of child abuse, but acquitted him of first-degree murder

Prosecutors allege the soldier inflicted blunt-force head injury while caring for Nicholas Johnson, a fellow soldier’s 2-month-old son. An autopsy found Nicholas died of blunt head trauma consistent with injuries seen in cases of shaken babies.
