COLUMBUS, Ohio — Three Ohio State football players have been suspended for Saturday’s game at Nebraska for accepting too much money for too little work in their summer jobs.
Last year’s leading rusher, Daniel Herron, and the top returning receiver, DeVier Posey, along with offensive lineman Marcus Hall will not be permitted to play when the Buckeyes (3-2) tangle with No. 14 Nebraska.
Herron and Posey had five-game suspensions — for accepting cash and free or discounted tattoos — extended. They were expected to be reinstated to play this week. Hall will be missing his first game.
Athletic director Gene Smith insisted at a Monday afternoon news conference that there was no “systemic” problem at Ohio State.
He blamed it all on the athletes involved and on former coach Jim Tressel and a booster who Monday was banned from further contact with the Buckeyes.
Footnotes.
Florida coach Will Muschamp said starting quarterback John Brantley has a lower leg injury that won’t require surgery, but it will keep the senior sidelined at least a week, including Saturday’s game against top-ranked LSU.
Freshman Jeff Driskel was penciled in to start against the Tigers, but Muschamp said freshmen Jacoby Brissett and Tyler Murphy will get repetitions in practice this week.
• South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier said sophomore Connor Shaw will replace Stephen Garcia as the starting quarterback when the Gamecocks play Kentucky on Saturday.
• Miami linebacker Ramon Buchanan will miss the remainder of his senior season because of a knee injury.
• Junior college transfer Jon Hays will start at quarterback for Utah against Arizona State after tests confirmed Jordan Wynn will be out two to three weeks because of a shoulder injury.
• Florida State quarterback EJ Manuel said his injured left (nonthrowing) shoulder feels better and he expects to play Saturday against Wake Forest.
• Northwestern quarterback Dan Persa (foot) is expected to play this week against No. 12 Michigan.
