SANTA FE, N.M.—A Northern New Mexico electric cooperative says it will issue a formal protest against a rate increase that a Colorado generator plans to pass along to 44 rural co-ops in four states starting Jan. 1.
The Santa Fe New Mexico reports () that Kit Carson Electric Co-op said Monday that a protest letter will be submitted to the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission. Last month, the Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association Inc. voted 43-1 to raise the rates by an average of 4.5 percent.
A Tri-State spokesman said the rate hike would be the company’s first in three years.
The 44 co-ops Tri-State sells to serve 1.5 million people in New Mexico, Colorado, Nebraska and Wyoming.
Kit Carson Electric Co-op serves 29,500 members in Taos, Colfax and Rio Arriba counties.
