A man was formally charged with 25 counts of theft today, after a summer-long series of break-ins on the Auraria college campus.
Cassidy Vandermeulen, 30, was charged with 25 counts of burglary, 25 counts of theft, possession of burglary tools and possession of a controlled substance, all felonies, according to a news release from the Denver District Attorney’s Office.
A contractor reported a break-in on July 5, after numerous items were stolen including a master key to Auraria campus buildings and offices. That burglary marked the beginning of a series of burglaries in which there was no forced entry and items such as laptops, textbooks and other electronics were stolen.
On Sept. 21, a campus bookstore employee spotted a suspicious man selling textbooks. He was later identified as Vandermeulen.
The Auraria Campus Police Department arrested Vandermeulen on Sept. 24.
Vandermeulen remains in custody at the Denver Detention Center and his bond has been set at $25,000. He is scheduled to appear in Denver County Courtroom 2100 on Oct. 7, at 9:30 a.m., to be formally advised of the charges against him.
