DENVER—A man accused of driving around Denver with a dead friend in the back of a car and running up a bar tab on his account says he thought the man was drunk, not deceased.

Forty-three-year-old Robert Young faces charges including abusing a corpse. He spoke before a court hearing in Denver Thursday.

Investigators allege Young and 25-year-old Mark Rubinson drove around with the body of their 43-year-old friend Jeffrey Jarrett in the their car in August.

Rubinson and Young aren’t charged in his death. Court officials say they’re waiting for the results of an autopsy to determine how Jarrett died.

An arrest warrant has been issued for Rubinson for failing to appear at a hearing Tuesday.

The case drew disturbing comparisons to the 1989 movie “Weekend at Bernie’s.”
