PAGO PAGO, American Samoa — A U.S. Coast Guard vessel is delivering water to a small island nation in the South Pacific that’s running out of drinking water.

The Cutter Walnut arrived in Tokelau on Friday morning, about 30 hours after leaving American Samoa. Petty Officer Angela Henderson says the crew is using small boats from the vessel to ferry 36,000 gallons of water.

Tokelau is home to about 1,500 people suffering from severe drought conditions.
