SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb.—Nebraskans are already complaining about SourceGas’ proposed natural gas rate hike.

The petition to increase rates enough to generate about $8.3 million more for the Lakewood, Colo.-based company was just submitted last Friday.

Nebraska Public Service Commissioner Jerry Vap tells KNEB radio ( ) that he’s already hearing from concerned customers who don’t like that the utility is asking for another increase so soon after this spring’s rate hike.

SourceGas serves about 87,000 customers in central and western Nebraska. Cities it serves include Holdrege, McCook, Scottsbluff and Wood River.

The company’s proposal would increase monthly service charges to $15 from $12.25 for residential customers. Small-business customers would see rates jump to $25 from $14.50, and large business rates would grow to $60 from $44.60.
