An accomplished group of students from the Colorado Association of Career Colleges and Schools (CACCS) gathered to accept awards last Friday, Sept. 30, at The Denver Post. The Student of the Year awards ceremony recognizes the outstanding achievements of students from the member schools of CACCS.

“My message was to acknowledge the huge achievement of these students,” said keynote speaker Patricia Chlouber, the former Regional Representative for the U.S. Department of Education. “I look at them as the contemporary student of today’s world, versus the traditional student who goes to high school, college and then finds a job.”

According to Jim Parker, director of the Division of Private Occupational Schools, there are 325 career schools and colleges in Colorado educating an average of 35,000 students per year. Steve Durham, executive director of the CACCS, explained that the member schools represent 35 private colleges that educate approximately 20,000 students across the state. On average, CACCS graduates 68 percent of their students and places over 80 percent of those who graduate in meaningful employment.

“These students have realized, ‘I may have to work and study at the same time, but I need
skills that fit today’s workplace needs,” said Chlouber. “And that’s not easy to do. It’s difficult to manage that kind of workload, it’s difficult just to come to that realization. These students should be applauded.”
