FORT COLLINS, Colo.—Larimer County voters are being asked to extend sales taxes for jail operations and other justice programs, but at a slightly lower rate.

An issue on the Nov. 1 ballot asks voters to repeal two taxes that total 0.4 percent and replace them with one tax of 0.375 percent.

County Commissioner Steve Johnson tells the Fort Collins Coloradoan () the county is pursuing a lower overall rate because the higher rate isn’t needed and because the lower tax has a better chance of passing.

The current taxes were approved in 1997. One was for funding the jail and a jail expansion. The other was for building courthouse facilities, such as the county justice center.

The jail tax expires next year. The new tax would be in place for 15 years.
