MILWAUKEE — Baseball commissioner Bud Selig said discussions on a new collective bargaining agreement have been very constructive, and he sees no reason to set a timetable for getting a deal done.
“I hope we’ll continue on that path,” Selig said Monday.
MLB’s agreement with the players union expires Dec. 11.
Selig said the present discussions have been far different from labor battles in previous decades. The most recent labor peace began when the sides came to an agreement after the cancellation of the end of the 1994 season.
“The sport, I’ve often said, was stuck in neutral for 25 years. And that’s one of the reasons. It was brutal. It was really brutal. Every two or three years we went back to this,” Selig said. “The fans got tired of all that, got tired of hearing about it. And I don’t blame them. So, 16 years of labor peace has really, really helped us.”
Selig said he has told MLB executive vice president Rob Manfred and union head Michael Weiner not to set arbitrary time limits to try to finish a deal.
“Just keep working, make progress, continue to make progress, and I think things will work out well,” Selig said.
Missing McGehee.
Brewers third baseman Casey McGehee hit three homers in one game this year against St. Louis starter Edwin Jackson, but his 3-for-45 slump to end the season and Jerry Hairston Jr.’s strong play kept him on the bench for Game 2.
“I wish we could put one more player in that lineup,” Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said before the Cardinals tied the series with a 12-3 victory. “If we were in the American League (with the designated hitter) he’d be in there.”
McGehee went 3-for-4 with three homers and five RBIs against Jackson in a 10-5 victory Aug. 3. In Game 2, he grounded out to Jackson in the fourth in his only at-bat.
Young replaces Ordoñez
ARLINGTON, Texas — Delmon Young was added to Detroit’s roster for Game 2 and replaced Magglio Ordoñez, another ailing outfielder who is out for the season after he refractured his right ankle.
The Tigers had initially left Young off their ALCS roster because of what was then described as a left oblique injury.Young went 0-for-4 from the No. 3 spot in the batting order.
