Colorado State senior Kim Mestdagh was tabbed the Mountain West Conference preseason women’s basketbal player of the year at the conference media day in Centennial today.

CSU was selected to finish third in the Mountain West. TCU led the way with 12 first-place votes, followed by San Diego State with seven first-place votes. The Rams received one first-place vote en route to a third-place finish.

New CSU head coach Kristen Holt was encouraged by the Rams’ showing.

“It’s something I think shows that we continue to improve,” she said. “This is the most talent I’ve had as a group.”

Mestdagh, a two-time second-team all-conference player, led the Rams to a fourth-place finish in 2010-11 averaging 17.1 points per game. She is currently 10th on the all-time points list at Colorado State. She is the first CSU player to receive the honor since Becky Hammon in 1998.

“Kim has become such a leader,” said Holt. “She works hard every single day, she’s very deserving.”

The Rams open their season with an exhibition game vs. Colorado Christian at 7 p.m. on Oct. 30 at Moby Arena.
