GOLDEN, Colo.—Police in Golden say an inmate who was shot by a Jefferson County sheriff’s deputy after he tried to escape during treatment at a medical facility has died.

The inmate’s name wasn’t released. Police said only that he had been held at the county jail for several felony charges.

Witnesses told KMGH-TV in Denver that the inmate was getting an MRI Tuesday in Golden, within a mile of the county jail, when he ran off. Police say a deputy shot him as he ran down a hallway.

Police say the inmate’s shackles and handcuffs had been removed for the medical treatment.
