The inmate who was fatally shot in Golden while trying to escape on Tuesday was identified Wednesday as 28-year-old Jesus Aguilar.
Aguilar, a robbery suspect, was shot by a Jefferson County sheriff’s deputy when he attempted to flee during an appointment at a medical facility, according to the Golden Police Department.
The deputy, who has not been identified, fired once and Aguilar collapsed at the entrance to the clinic. Aquilar’s shackles had been removed so he could receive treatment.
Aguilar was originally arrested by Lakewood police on Sept. 8. Police suspected he was involved in two robberies there.
Aguilar was being held on suspicion of criminal attempted robbery, four counts of aggravated robbery, two counts of second-degree kidnapping, first-degree aggravated motor vehicle theft, possession of a weapon by a previous offender and a parole violation.
The deputy has been with the Sheriff’s Office for four years and is a “detentions officer” who typically works at the jail, said Jacki Kelley, a sheriff’s spokeswoman.
