The inmate who was fatally shot while trying to escape in Golden on Tuesday, was identified today as 28-year-old Jesus Aguilar.

Aguilar was shot by a Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputy when he attempted to flee during an appointment at a medical facility, according to a news release from the Golden Police Department.

The deputy, who has not been identified, fired once and Aguilar collapsed at the entrance to the facility.

He was transported to St. Anthony’s Hospital and Medical Center where he later died.

Aguilar was originally arrested by officers with the Lakewood Police Department on Sept. 8. Police suspected he was involved in two robberies in the city.

Aguilar was being held on suspicion of criminal attempted robbery, four counts of aggravated robbery, two counts of second-degree kidnapping, first-degree aggravated motor vehicle theft, possession of a weapon by a previous offender and a parole violation.

Aguilar has a criminal record stretching as far back as 2001, including two assault charges out of Denver in 2004, according to state records. He was also arrested for several traffic violations.

Tuesday’s shooting is still under investigation.

The deputy has been with the sheriff’s office for four years and is a “detentions officer” who typically works at the jail, said Jacki Kelley, a sheriff’s spokeswoman.

The deputy is on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation.

He has not been part of any other officer-involved shootings.
