CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Carl Edwards thought his race might be over after he smashed into the wall less than 50 miles into the 300-mile Nationwide race. Turns out his Mustang had plenty left.

Edwards worked his way up from 27th to the front five laps from the end, moving past Kyle Busch on the final restart to win the Dollar General 300 Miles of Courage at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

“Running into the wall usually doesn’t work out too well for you,” Edwards said.

Crew chief Mike Beam talked Edwards through it, telling him the car was strong enough to get him back in. “And luckily, Carl drove his guts out,” Beam said.

Tony Kanaan posted a speed of 222.078 mph to win the pole position for Sunday’s Las Vegas Indy 300.

Cruz Pedregon (funny car), Larry Dixon (top fuel), Mike Edwards (pro stock) and Eddie Krawiectook (pro stock motorcycle) were the top provisional qualifiers for Sunday’s NHRA Arizona Nationals.

Simpson stays near McGladrey Classic lead

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. — Webb Simpson, in a chase to win the PGA Tour money title, made two late birdies for a 3-under-par 67 at the McGladrey Classic, leaving him two shots behind Billy Horschel, who picked up four shots over his last four holes for a 64—128.

After finishing his second round, Simpson said he would play the PGA Tour’s final tournament next week at Disney in his bid to capture the money title. Luke Donald, atop the money list by $68,971 over Simpson, said earlier in the day he would play Disney.
