AUSTIN, Texas — Twice Oklahoma State’s Jeremy Smith took a handoff, hit the line of the scrimmage and braced himself to get smacked.
Instead, there was nothing but yards of green field, the burnt orange end zone and the groans of nearly 100,000 Texas fans in front on him.
Smith ran for 140 yards on seven carries, scoring on runs of 30 and 74 yards straight up the middle of the defense, and No. 6 Oklahoma State rode several big plays to a 38-26 win over the No. 22 Longhorns on Saturday.
Justin Gilbert tied a school record with his fourth career kickoff return for a touchdown and the Cowboys have won two years in a row in Austin after 12 consecutive years of excruciating defeats.
“It’s not easy to come down here and win and they’re a much better team football team than they were last year,” Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy said.
“We never know who’s going to be the guy that makes big plays for our offense. We have so many weapons that they have to continue to play unselfish and Jeremy’s just kind of been there the last few weeks.”
Brandon Weeden passed for 218 yards, including a touchdown to Justin Blackmon, for Oklahoma State.
Texas freshman quarterback David Ash got his first start and took every snap in the loss after rotating with sophomore Case McCoy the previous three weeks.
Ash was 22-of-40 passing for 139 yards with no touchdowns and two turnovers. The first was an interception that set up Oklahoma State’s first touchdown and the third was a fumble with 4:34 to play that killed Texas’ last chance to rally.
No. 3 Oklahoma 47, Kansas 17
LAWRENCE, Kan. — Dominique Whaley had 165 yards rushing and a touchdown, and Michael Hunnicutt hit all four of his field-goal attempts for the Sooners, who didn’t put away the Jayhawks until Ryan Broyles’ second touchdown catch with 10:22 remaining in the fourth quarter.
No. 17 Kansas State 41, Texas Tech 34
LUBBOCK, Texas — Collin Klein ran for three touchdowns and threw for another as Kansas State rallied to be undefeated after six games for the first time since 2000.
Seth Doege had 461 yards and a touchdown on 43-of-63 passing, but had three of his four turnovers in consecutive possessions in the fourth quarter.
No. 21 Texas A&M 55, No. 20 Baylor 28
COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Ryan Tannehill threw for 415 yards and a career-high six touchdowns and Ryan Swope caught four of them.
The Bears got within six points after a touchdown run by Terrance Ganaway in third quarter before the Aggies scored 21 straight to take a 55-28 lead with about six minutes remaining.
Missouri 52, Iowa State 17
COLUMBIA, Mo. — James Franklin accounted for five touchdowns and Henry Josey had 129 yards rushing and a score in Missouri’s 100th homecoming game.
