TORONTO — Hockey people are starting to bring up David Jones’ name a lot more these days. After a 27-goal season, Jones has four in six games and is gaining more of a reputation as a top sharpshooter.
Jones’ rebound putback 1:11 into overtime against Toronto didn’t require a precise shot but needed good positioning.
“I was a little surprised when the puck just came right to me,” Jones said. “I didn’t have to do a lot. (Kyle) Quincey helped make the play by getting it on net as hard as he did.”
Jones said his surgically repaired right knee is stronger now than last season, when he scored a career high in goals.
Mueller update.
Left winger Peter Mueller missed his third consecutive game Monday night, but the Avalanche said he was “available” to play and didn’t only because of a coach’s decision.
Mueller skated again Monday morning, but coach Joe Sacco said he wants to give Mueller a couple of more practices before entertaining thoughts of putting him back in the lineup.

Jean-Sebastien Giguere, whose victory was the 233rd of his career, said he felt “relaxed” against his for- mer team. “It was a lot of fun to play in this game,” he said.
