BOULDER, Colo.—The University of Colorado says a 21-year-old female student has been diagnosed with meningococcal meningitis (mehn-ihn-guh-KAH’-kuhl men-in-JY’-tuhs).
Health officials from the university and Boulder County said Monday the student is hospitalized. She is a junior living off campus but her name hasn’t been released.
Dr. Don Misch (MISH), assistant vice chancellor for health and wellness, says his understanding is that the student is doing well.
She was diagnosed Friday. Authorities say no other current cases have been diagnosed in Colorado.
Health officials say most of the students and staff who came in close contact with the student have been notified and offered treatment. The disease can spread to others but officials say that’s rare.
The bacteria causes an infection of the tissue surround the brain and spinal cord.
