Ron Paul, a Republican candidate for president, announced a plan Monday to cut $1 trillion from federal spending in a single year, drastically reducing the size and scope of government. His “Plan to Restore America” calls for eliminating the departments of Energy, Housing and Urban Development, Commerce, Interior and Education and abolishing the Transportation Security Administration.

His plan includes a 10 percent reduction in the federal workforce and cuts in congressional pay. He would repeal a number of industry regulations, privatize the Federal Aviation Administration and shrink the Environmental Protection Agency by 30 percent from its 2006 budget levels.
