Thousands of Denverites received in the mail this week the lineup for the 14th season of the Unique Lives & Experience speakers series.
Five women are due this year at the series, which is moving to the more intimate Ellie from the Buell. The brochure heralds an add-on special evening with Maya Angelou on May 24. But that ain’t happening.
Unique Lives boss Howard Szigeti told me Angelou had to cancel and that he hopes she’ll be here in 2013.
But the brochure was printed, so the news went out. Szigeti put in a sticky note to alert the lecture league. Sorry, no Maya.
Still on the sked: Victoria Reggie Kennedy, Feb. 13; Valerie Plame Wilson, March 15; Lucie Arnaz, April 30; Jamie Lee Curtis, May 15; Connie Chung, June 4.
“We sent out a survey to subscribers, and, by and large, this is the group they picked,” says Szigeti. “I added on Lucie Arnaz because I just liked it and to honor (her mom) Lucy’s 100th birthday. She brings in some home movies, and it’s a great evening.”

Monster mash.
It seems most of the traveling the Travel Channel is doing is to Denver. Here comes another production: “Making Monsters” at 1 a.m. Tuesdays — showing us how Denver makes monsters. It stars Ed and Marsha Edmunds, co-owners of Distortions Unlimited in Greeley, a mom-and-pop monster factory. We also will meet Denver comic artist Daniel Crosier, along with the iconic blue tattooed sideshow performer, The Enigma.
Crosier and the team from Distortions will be on hand for a screening of the show at the Denver Film Center/Colfax at 7 p.m. on Oct. 27.
Long tall Laurie.
Laurie and Wayne Hallquist were measured and recognized last year by Guinness World Records as America’s tallest living married couple. She is 6 feet 5; he’s 6-11.
To make this story even cuter, each year on their wedding anniversary, the too-tall twosome from California draws a letter from the alphabet and then picks a city beginning with the letter that neither of them have ever visited. This year, it was a “T” — and that means Thornton. And Denver.
“Laurie’s parents met and married in Denver, so we wanted to see that too,” says Wayne.
They went to Thornton for a cuppa coffee, had their pictures taken with a Thornton sign, then spent most of their time in Denver, which, of course, included a Segway tour of LoDo.
“It was gorgeous,” Wayne said. “We could live here.”
And they managed to avoid any protesters. Now, all they have to do is fight for extra legroom on the way home.
