DENVER—A Kit Carson group home where a Cheyenne sheriff’s deputy and their five foster or adopted children killed in a highway collision last lived will remain licensed by the state and open to foster children.
Seven children were also injured Thursday when a van driven by Howard Mitchell crashed into the back of a tractor-trailer rig between the small eastern Colorado towns of Kit Carson and Eads.
Department of Human Services spokeswoman Liz McDonough says the surviving foster children will be placed in a home where they can best heal and grieve. Privacy laws prevent her from releasing details.
Melody Mitchell, family members and friends will speak to the media Wednesday afternoon at a Denver hospital where some of the children are recovering from injuries they suffered in the crash.
