Confession: Nigel Slater is one of my favorite writers. Second confession: I usually hate book-to-screen adaptations, because they never get it right. But this spin looks promising: “Toast,” based on Slater’s excellent 2004 memoir of growing up (and eating) in 1960s Britain, is now a feature film, opening Friday at the Chez Artiste theater in Denver.
