DENVER—Authorities say an autopsy didn’t determine what caused the death of a Denver infant in August.

The medical examiner’s announcement came Wednesday.

Ten-month-old Adam Gonzales’ mother and a friend have been arrested in the death. It’s not clear what impact the autopsy finding would have on the prosecution.

The friend, 23-year-old Frances Garcia, faces charges of first-degree murder and fatal child abuse. Prosecutors allege she wrapped the baby in a blanket, placed him in a closet with a propped-up bottle and covered his face with a blanket to muffle his crying during the night.

The mother, 24-year-old mother, Amanda Lujan, is accused of lying about what happened. She faces charges of being an accessory to both charges against Garcia.

It wasn’t known if either has a lawyer.
