SYDNEY — Queen Elizabeth II arrived in Australia on Wednesday at the start of what is likely to be her last visit to the former British colony.

The queen, on her 16th visit to Australia, received a curtsy from Governor General Quentin Bryce, her local representative and stand-in head of state. Prime Minister Julia Gillard, Welsh-born and an ardent republican, settled for just a handshake and a nod of the head.

After day trips to Brisbane and Melbourne, the queen, 85, will fly across the continent to open the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Perth.
