The Colorado Transportation Commission today approved a budget measure that allocates $60 million for a project that will widen the eastbound bore of the Twin Tunnels on Interstate 70 near Idaho Springs.

The tunnel in the I-70 mountain corridor is a notorious traffic bottleneck and the Colorado Department of Transportation’s project calls for other improvements in that area, including expanding the highway and smoothing out curves on the roadway. CDOT hopes to begin the Twin Tunnels project in 2013 upon completion of an environmental review.

The Commission also voted to contribute $31 million for another phase of widening and other improvements to Interstate 25 in north Colorado Springs.
