The Colorado Transportation Commission on Thursday approved a budget measure that allocates $60 million for a project to widen the eastbound bore of the Twin Tunnels on Interstate 70 near Idaho Springs. The tunnel in the I-70 mountain corridor is a notorious traffic bottleneck, and the Colorado Department of Transportation’s project calls for other improvements in that area, including expanding the highway and smoothing out curves. CDOT hopes to begin the project in 2013 upon completion of an environmental review.
