OAKLAND, Calif. — A small earthquake hit the San Francisco area Thursday, causing a sharp jolt but no damage or injuries.
The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake registered 4.0 magnitude and was centered 2 miles southeast of Berkeley. It struck at 2:31 p.m.
The quake came on the same day Californians took part in an annual earthquake-preparedness drill at 10:20 a.m.. More than 8.5 million people signed up to participate in the 2011 Great California ShakeOut.
The quake also came almost 22 years to the day after the Loma Prieta temblor struck the Bay Area during the 1989 World Series on Oct. 17.
Officials at Bay Area Rapid Transit said the system’s trains were delayed about 15 minutes as workers inspected the tracks. Officials at Caltrain said none of its trains were being delayed.
