AURORA, Colo.—A man who says Aurora police attacked him when they were supposed to be helping him with a medical emergency is suing the city and three officers in federal court.

Fifty-four-year-old Rickey Burrell’s lawsuit alleges Aurora police have a custom of police brutality and violating constitutional rights.

His attorney, Mari Newman, says his family called 911 on Dec. 18 because Burrell had a seizure. The Denver Post reports ( ) that in the call, police were told Burrell was combative.

The lawsuit accuses police of breaking Burrell’s wrist and exacerbating his existing back problems as they handcuffed him and later took him for medical treatment.

City Attorney Charlie Richardson declined to comment on details of the incident.
