DENVER—A man convicted of killing his girlfriend, who was an active U.S. Air Force airman, has received a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Twenty-five-year-old former Air Force Airman Robert Walters was sentenced Monday for the first-degree murder of 22-year-old Brittney Brashers. A Denver jury convicted him last month.

Police discovered Brashers’ death early Nov. 17, 2009, after reports of a traffic accident. Investigators said they later determined Walters had punched and choked Brashers, then staged a car wreck to make it look like she had died in a traffic accident.
