COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—El Paso County commissioners have revised a moratorium they enacted through late January on new permits for exploratory drilling.
They had enacted the moratorium so they could have time to write local regulations on commercial oil and gas activity, which is new to the county.
The Gazette reports () commissioners last week approved a change that would enable Ultra Resources to begin exploratory vertical drilling by early next year to look for oil and natural gas in southeastern El Paso County, though production still will be banned.
Commissioner Sallie Clark says impacts of the exploration will be minimal.
Ultra Resources has already applied for state permits for the exploratory drilling. Commissioner Dennis Hisey says the company wanted to get its state and local permits going at the same time.
