FORT CARSON, Colo.—The 1st Brigade Combat Team at Fort Carson has a new command sergeant major.

Dennis Defreese was taking over the job from Gerald Kinloch in a ceremony Wednesday at the post.

Defreese’s previous assignment was as command sergeant major for a brigade in the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum, N.Y. Defreese has deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan and served as a drill sergeant and first sergeant.

Kinloch will move to a position in 4th Infantry Division operations at Fort Carson.

A command sergeant major looks after the welfare of noncommissioned officers and enlisted personnel and makes recommendations to commanders. It’s the highest noncommissioned officer rank in the Army.
