DENVER—A thief who mangled a shopper’s finger while grabbing a bag with an iPad inside has been sentenced to 25 years in prison.

Twenty-two-year-old Brandon Smith pleaded guilty last month to aggravated robbery, second-degree assault and to a separate robbery. He was sentenced Friday.

Prosecutors say Smith grabbed Bill Jordan’s shopping bag after Jordan left an Apple store in 2010. The bag’s strings were wrapped around Jordan’s hand, and Smith grabbed the bag with such force that Jordan’s pinky later had to be amputated.

The second-degree assault charge came after Smith was accused of asking a friend to try to kill Jordan to keep him from testifying.

The Denver Post reports ( ) Smith apologized in court Friday and said he was motivated by drugs.
