Q: Ever since I upgraded my Mac to OS X Lion, it’s been correcting my spelling on its own in e-mail and Web posts. How can I turn this off before it does something embarrassing that I don’t notice ahead of time?

A: As it does on its iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad devices, Apple includes an automatic correction feature on Macs that can sometimes make less-than-desirable changes. Fortunately, this feature can be turned off. To do so, open the System Preferences box, either by clicking its icon in the Dock or going to the Apple menu in the top left corner and selecting System Preferences. Next, click the Language & Text icon and then click on the Text tab. Remove the check from the box next to “Correct spelling automatically.”
