BRIGHTON, Colo.—Adams County communities are protesting a decision by Adams County Sheriff Doug Darr to impose a cap on prisoners beginning next year.

The cap calls for cities to get a limited number of beds at the county jail and pay a $55 fee for each prisoner if the cap is exceeded. The cities will see their jail beds cut from 130 to 30.

According to the Denver Post ( ), the sheriff wants to stop city residents from being sent to the jail for petty offenses and cover a budget gap.

The cities say the cap is unnecessary. They say the county could send municipal prisoners to less-crowded jails in rural areas and cut spending.
