A cut to a fiber-optic line silenced thousands of cell phones in northwest Colorado this afternoon, and service still has not been restored.
CenturyLink spokesman John Hall said the company hopes to restore all service this evening, but he could not estimate when.
CenturyLink is still trying to determine how the line was damaged between Frisco and Dillon just after 2 p.m.
Hall said Centurylink did not have a crew working in the area at the time.
“We just don’t know about that yet,” he said at about 6:25 p.m. “I can tell you we’re definitely working as quickly as possible to get everyone restored.”
The cut line knocked out cell phone service to Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile customers. It affected 32 cell phone tower locations northwest of Frisco, including Steamboat Springs, Craig and Winter Park.
In addition to cell service, the cut disrupted long-distance service for land lines, Hall said.
CenturyLink was able to quickly reroute 9-1-1 services in the region, except for a small area near Hartsel, he said.
