NEW ORLEANS—Seven people have applied so far to be president of the University of New Orleans.
In a news release Tuesday, the University of Louisiana System said others have expressed interest through the consultant firm hired to aid with the search, R. H. Perry and Associates, and more applications are expected. The presidential search committee has set a Nov. 15 meeting to pick semi-finalists.
The top job at UNO has been open since September 2010 when then-chancellor Tim Ryan was ousted amid disagreements with officials of the LSU system. Since then, the Legislature has approved the transfer of UNO from the LSU system to the University of Louisiana system, which governs eight other universities around the state.
Interviews with semi-finalist candidates are tentatively set for the week of Nov. 30. Officials hope to have a selection made at the meeting of the UL Board set for Dec. 8 and 9.
The candidates so far:
— Gary G. Altman, general manager and vice president of Business Development at Beckman Coulter, a California-based biomedical products company.
— Kwo-Sun Chu, former senior executive of Emerging Technology at Sowela Technical Community College.
— Felix L. James, an attorney and businessman who is a founder and partner of Urbana International, LLC, a marketing consultant company; a co-owner of an emergency information system company; and a former associate provost at Rutgers, according to his application.
— William E. McHenry, executive director of the Mississippi e-Center and professor of Chemistry at Jackson State University.
— Peter A. Perhac, president and chief executive officer of the Steamboat Campus of Colorado Mountain College.
— Colin G. Scanes, vice chancellor of Research and Economic Development, dean of the Graduate School, and professor of Biological Science at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee.
— Martin M. Shapiro, professor of Marketing, Management and International Business at Berkely Colleges in New York and New Jersey.
All seven have doctorates, according to UL.
