Veteran’s Day is Friday, Nov. 11. There are numerous events across Colorado in the week leading up to the holiday, as well as events on the day itself.

Saturday Nov. 5

Denver parade Colorado-based United Launch Alliance will be the first-ever presenting sponsor of the Denver Veterans Day Parade and Fallen Heroes Honor Roll Reading. The parade, with nearly 100 groups gathering to honor active military servicemen and women, veterans, first responders and the fallen, will be at 10 a.m. The parade will begin on the corner of Bannock and Colfax. Participants will march along 14th street to Court Place, then turn on 15th St. and march to Welton St., then will follow Welton St. to 17th St., then will follow 17th St. to Broadway. Once at Broadway, they will march to Colfax and 14th Ave. where the Parade Review Stand will be located between Civic Center Park and the State Capitol. The parade features 9/11 World Trade Center Steel, floats, military units, first responder units, equestrians, vintage cars, marching bands, a fly-over, cannon and gun salutes and live entertainment. After the parade (between 11:30 a.m. and noon), at the Fallen Heroes Honor Roll Reading at the Colorado Veterans Monument in the park west of the state capitol between Lincoln and Broadway, names will be read of Colorado war heroes who have given their lives for our country. Auraria 5K run The third annual Denver Veterans Day 5K Run and Walk will be held at Auraria Campus with runners/walkers taking off at 8 a.m. from outside the Tivoli Student Lounge. They will follow a paved, double-loop course around the campus and pass the Vietnam Memorial Traveling Wall. There is a registration fee of $30 ($20 for Veterans) which includes a t-shirt and refreshments. Prizes will be awarded to the top three winners in each category. In attendance on race day: U.S. Rep. Ed Perlmutter and Colorado Assistant Adjunct General Brigadier General Dana Capozzella as well as the support of the US Army Reserve 349th Tactical Psychological Operations Company. Grand Junction parade The Grand Junction Veteran’s Day parade starts at 2 p.m. on 8th Street, then heads west on Main to 1st (City Market parking lot).

Grand Junction poppies American Legion will present poppies to Veterans at 10 a.m. at Mesa View Retirement Residence, 601 Horizon Place, Grand Junction.

Nov. 5 and 6

Denver flag placing Volunteers are needed to assist Fairmount Heritage Foundation place flags at veterans’ gravesites from 10 a.m to 4 p.m. Nov. 5 and 6 at Fairmount Cemetery, 430 S. Denver clothing/hygiene item drive The Fairmont Heritage Foundation is collecting clothing and hygiene items for men and women to be donated to the Denver Veteran’s Hospital. Donations of the following items are being accepted: hats, gloves, and scarves, all sizes, for men and women; underwear and socks, all sizes, for men and women; toiletries for men and women; sunscreen and lipbalm. Denver VA A “VA Information Day” event will be from 8 a.m. to noon in the auditorium at the Denver VA Medical Center, 1055 Clermont St. The event is an opportunity for any Veteran to come to the Medical Center and find information about (and assistance applying for) any VA benefit they may be entitled to. Nursing staff will be in attendance to provide flu shots and blood pressure checks to eligible Veterans. There will be high level representatives and information on: Healthcare Eligibility and Enrollment, Women Veterans Program, Jobs with VA, Mental Health Services, Compensation and Pension, Homeless Veteran Programs, Suicide Prevention Program, GI Bill, VA Home Loan, Survivor Benefits, Burial Benefits and more.

Community College of Aurora Free Veteran’s Day events will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Student Centre Rotunda on the Community College of Aurora’s CentreTech Campus, 16000 E. Arapahoe VA bake sale The Arapahoe County Veterans Service Office is hosting its 3rd annual “Treats for Troops” bake sale from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the lobby of the Arapahoe County Administration Building, 5334 S. Lakewood donation drive A Soldier’s Wish List is holding a donation drive from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the food Court at Colorado Mills Mall. A Soldiers Wish List sends care packages to troops serving overseas. Donations of the following items are needed: personal hygiene items, snacks, drink mixes, microwavable meals, games (hand held and board), sporting equipment, Mens Health magazines, CD’s, DVD’s, white or black gym socks, underwear, books, pens, paper, envelopes, and Christmas and Hannukah decorations so they can decorate for the holidays. Some soldiers have asked for assistance for their families for the holidays. Toys, games and clothing are being collected for soldiers’ families. Colorado Springs videos “Roosters Remembers – The Veterans Video Project,” an opportunity for Colorado Springs-area Veterans who would like to share their stories on video to be produced by Steve Mack of Impact Video Production, will be available on Nov. 11 at Roosters Men’s Grooming Center, 1466 W. Garden of the Gods Road. In addition to preserving the stories, edited portions of the interview may be used at Roosters, the Mountain Post Historical Center and other locations. Durango parade The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4031 Members and members of the Ladies and Men’s Auxiliaries are sponsoring the annual Veteran’s Day Parade in Durango. Broomfield ceremony The Broomfield Veterans Memorial Museum is holding a Veterans Day ceremony from 10 a.m. to noon. The ceremony will be in the Broomfield High School Auditorium, 1 Eagle Way. The event is free and open to the public. The Keynote speaker is Broomfield native US Army Lt. Col. Andrew Ulrich. The Broomfield Police Department Honor Guard will present the colors. Broomfield lecture “Saints and Sinners: The Pentagon Disagreements on Vietnam,” a morning talk with coffee, donuts and conversation with retired US Army Col. CSU 5K run The Veterans at Colorado State University Veterans Day 5K race will begin at 9 a.m. at the Oval on the Colorado State University campus in Fort Collins. Net proceeds will go towards the (Veteran) Scholarship Fund at CSU with the intent to “support future leaders and the men and women who have paid service to us.” Pre-registration, (by noon on Nov. 11) is $25; race day registration is $30 and begins at 7:30 a.m. Race day registration payment will be by check only.
