DENVER—Sen. Michael Bennet wants to see a new National Veterans Foundation to coordinate public and private resources for vets.

The Democratic senator announced the idea Monday at an American Legion Post in Denver.

Bennet says the nation needs a renewed focus on veterans because troops will be out of Iraq by year’s end and a drawdown is beginning in Afghanistan.

Bennet says his plan would emphasize employment for new veterans. Bennet met with veterans in Colorado Springs and Denver this summer before announcing his plan.

Later this week, Bennet and other Senate Democrats are expected to add language to a bill offering tax breaks to companies that hire veterans and provide vets with employment counseling and other job-hunting services.
