DENVER—The Colorado Economic Development Commission is coming under fire for approving some questionable projects paid for by taxpayers.

Former state Rep. Joel Judd tells the Denver Post () he met with stiff opposition when he tried to eliminate the Enterprise Zone Program, which is supposed to help distressed communities with economic development projects.

Taxpayer-funded projects include a museum in Burlington honoring a wooden carousel, refurbishing a firefighting museum in Idaho Springs and subsidizing construction of the Belmar Shopping Center in Lakewood.

Program officials say they put the brakes on some projects after questions were raised.
