A 55-year-old Hudson man was sentenced to five years of probation after pleading guilty to stealing almost $22,000 worth of his dead mother’s Social Security benefits.
Wayne Henry Ackermann was sentenced in U.S. District court and ordered to spend the first six months of his sentence in home detention with electronic monitoring, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
On April 6, Ackermann was indicted by a federal grand jury in Denver. He pleaded guilty on Aug. 2 and was sentenced on Oct. 17.
Ackermann’s mother, who was receiving Social Security Survivor’s Insurance Benefits known as widows benefits, died on April 13, 2007. The payments were made electronically into her bank account every month.
From May 3, 2007 to March 3, 2009, Ackermann, who knew he was not entitled to the benefits, used a debit card linked to his mother’s bank account, to withdraw $21,988. The card expired in March 2009.
