Proceeds from the state’s sale of a railroad line in Southeastern Colorado could fund a project to improve consumer confidence in Rocky Ford cantaloupe, Colorado Agriculture Commissioner John Salazar told The Chieftain.
Salazar wants to establish a voluntary certification program through the state agriculture department to ease concerns about health risks from eating cantaloupe following a multi-state listeria outbreak.
The outbreak was traced to Jensen Farms in Holly and has been linked to 29 deaths.
