BOULDER, Colo.—Boulder police are investigating the discovery of a severed bison head left on a decorative rock in a front yard.

The Denver Post reports ( ) that police quickly ruled out one obvious potential source for a bison head in Boulder, the beloved buffalo mascot at the University of Colorado named Ralphie.

Boulder police spokeswoman says a check on Ralphie shortly after the discovery Sunday morning showed he is OK.

Neighbors could not provide additional information, including a why a severed head would be left on that lawn.

Kobel says the case is being investigated as an animal cruelty case and investigators are reaching out to local ranchers and processing plants to find the source of the head.
