MADISON, Wis. — The bitter partisan trench war that has transformed Wisconsin into a proxy for polarization nationwide opened a new front Tuesday with the formal launch of a petition drive to force a recall vote on freshman Republican Gov. Scott Walker.
The jockeying began before the first petition was signed. A Walker supporter filed recall papers with election officials two weeks ago, a strategic move that allowed the governor to legally begin raising cash to defend his office before the real effort got underway. Walker’s campaign also launched an advertising blitz against the recall.
