DURANGO, Colo.—Durango fire officials are cutting air packs and training to cope with budget cuts after a property tax measure failed.

Durango Fire & Rescue Authority officials say the agency’s 71 full-time employees will also begin paying insurance premiums next year and will not receive pay raises for the third year in a row.

According to the Durango Herald ( ), the department plans to trim $84,000 by postponing equipment purchases, including air packs used to enter smoky buildings, and $27,200 from training expenses.

Deputy Chief Hal Doughty says the budget cuts have made it difficult to fill vacant positions.
