EGYPT: Clash raises fears of violence by military.

A deadly clash between soldiers and protesters in the Nile Delta city of Damietta is sharpening concerns that the Egyptian military has decided to confront peaceful protesters with harsh tactics, including live ammunition, in the volatile days before parliamentary elections begin Nov. 28.

One person was killed and a dozen injured Sunday when Egyptian troops with assault rifles opened fire on about 50 demonstrators who had camped overnight to demand that a fertilizer factory stop dumping chemical waste into the waters off Damietta. In the days since, protesters have paralyzed Damietta’s busy port.

During Libya’s uprising, British intelligence agencies foiled an attack on the leadership of Libya’s National Transitional Council and Western representatives by forces loyal to Moammar Gadhafi, Foreign Secretary William Hague said Wednesday.

Hague said the overseas intelligence agency MI6 and electronic-listening agency GCHQ played a key role in the successful NATO-led operation in Libya by offering insight into the intentions of forces backing the late dictator and how battles in key cities were progressing.

“They saved lives,” Hague declared.
