AURORA, Colo.—Aurora is paying $215,000 to a man who was shot and paralyzed by police after a vehicle in which he was a passenger hit an officer while trying to escape.
Authorities say 18-year-old Yevgeniy Straystar was shot as he and two men were driving away from a storage yard where they planned to steal car parts last March.
According to the Denver Post ( ), the city settled with Straystar because Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates felt the officer who shot Straystar violated police policy for using deadly force. Police policy says a vehicle driving in the direction of an officer is not reason enough to open fire.
