A small fire broke out this afternoon in the basement of the Denver School of the Arts and firefighters quickly doused it.

There were no injuries, but the school was evacuated as a safety precaution, said Lt. Phil Champagne, a Denver Fire Department spokesman.

The fire at the school, 7111 Montview Blvd., started about 1:40 p.m., Champagne said.

The fire was smokey, but damage was minimal.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
